Wake Up Your Zodiac: How the Slave Trade Taught Us to Dim Our Potential

I’ve watched so many people from my ethnic group not fully step into their potential — myself included.
At first, I thought it was just me. But over time I recognized it as a pattern — a trauma rooted in enslavement, where people were systematically forced into codependency until it became embedded in our DNA.
When we link “not fully showing up for our own potential” — ignoring or suppressing our gifts, worth, and power — to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, we see how the system deliberately trained African-descended people to doubt and diminish themselves for generations. Here’s how it was done:
Disruption of identity: Enslaved Africans were stripped of language, culture, names, and spiritual systems. This “forced forgetting” fractured identity, teaching them to mistrust their own wisdom and adopt the oppressor’s worldview for survival.
Devaluation of humanity: Enslaved people were reduced to property, reinforcing the lie that their value came only through labor. This embedded the belief: “I’m only valuable if I produce or serve someone else.”
Division as control: Enslavers pitted house against field, light against dark, men against women. Spirituality was weaponized — indigenous beliefs demonized, and religion reframed to teach obedience — fueling shame, comparison, and fear of personal power.
Enforced dependency: Families were torn apart, autonomy over basic needs was stripped away, and survival meant anticipating the master’s demands. Attempts at independence — from practicing faith to seeking freedom — were brutally punished. Obedience and over-attachment became the only safe options.
Over time, this conditioned survival strategies such as:
Hide your brilliance.
Lower your light so you aren’t targeted.
Work hard but don’t claim credit.
Distrust your body, intuition, and roots.
Shrink your potential to preserve belonging.
This is the deepest form of “sleeping on yourself” — being taught it’s safer to forget who you are.
How It Shows Up Today (2025)
Ignoring our gifts: Dismissing intuition or talents, self-sabotaging by downplaying skills until opportunities pass us by.
Delaying action: Postponing the very steps (sharing work, asking for what we deserve) that could move us forward.
Settling for less: Accepting jobs, relationships, or environments beneath our true worth.
Letting fear or doubt lead: Overthinking, avoiding, or allowing fear of rejection, failure, or success to make choices for us.
Codependency: Giving so much of ourselves that our own growth is stunted — repeating the belief that safety depends on keeping others happy.
How Each Zodiac Sign Sleeps on Itself (and Self-Sabotages)
